Mathematics

Mathematics is the science and study of quantity, structure, space and change. Mathematicians seek out patterns, formulate new conjectures and establish truth through measurement and application of tested equations.

Math Foundations Level 3

This course is for those students who need to review basic concepts in math. Students may choose the units which they feel they need to work on. Initial units include place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of whole numbers. Further units explore fractions, decimals, area & volume, metric conversions, angles, and statistics. Students are encouraged to answer the questions without the use of a calculator. There is no textbook as each unit is a handout.

Math Foundations 6

This course is designed to prepare students for Apprenticeship and Workplace Math 11. Basics in integers, measurement, percent-ages, graphing and simple algebra will be covered. If you are feeling rusty or unsure, you will benefit from this course.

Math Foundations Level 7

This course is designed for students who plan to take either Foundations of Math 11 or Pre-Calculus 11, but whose math background is not strong enough to enable them to proceed directly to those courses. It provides a “bridge” to enable students to obtain the prerequisite skills necessary for success in Foundations of Math 11 or Pre-Calculus 11. Topics covered include metric and imperial measurement, basic trigonometry, factoring, radicals, rational numbers, and polynomials. Students will need a scientific calculator (preferably a Sharp brand) which they will learn to use extensively while working with integers, fractions, exponents, and roots.

Apprenticeship and Workplace Math 11

This is a very practical math course that involves concepts students will use in everyday life. Some of these concepts include managing money, borrowing & investing, finding surface area and volume of various shapes, slope, scale, graphing, and basic trigonometry. Students will use a scientific calculator extensively as a tool to help solve mathematical problems. The textbook is Mathworks 11 Workbook.

Foundations of Math 11

This course is not quite as abstract as Pre-Calculus 11 but is still quite challenging. It explores topics such as deductive and inductive reasoning, properties of angles & triangles, trigonometry, statistics, linear inequalities, quadratic functions, and proportions. Part of the course involves learning how to use some of the functions of a graphing calculator. Students will need the textbook Foundations of Mathematics 11 (Nelson) as well as a graphing calculator. These can both be borrowed from our school for a deposit of \$100, which is refundable if both are returned in good condition.

Pre-Calculus 11

This is a challenging math course that deals with abstract concepts, which are often used to solve real-life problems. Topics include Sequences & Series, Trigonometry, Quadratics, Radicals, Rational Expressions, Absolute Value, Systems of Equations, and Inequalities. Students will need the textbook Pre-Calculus 11 (McGraw-Hill Ryerson) as well as a graphing calculator. These can both be borrowed from our school for a deposit of \$100, which is refundable if both are returned in good condition.
